Excel is a spreadsheet programme, which means that it is software for collecting data in boxes, which are called cells, and rows. It is part of the Office programmes created by Microsoft. It is most commonly used by businesses to analyse data. Furthermore, In addition, it is used simply to store data, for accounting, account management or to create reports. It can perform mathematical calculations and even create graphs. Visual Basic for Applications is the macro programming language used in excel (Gillis, 2022).
It is software that can be used for free via a web browser, but it is a reduced version; the full version of the programme is available via a Microsoft 365 subscription. If you are a student in most cases you have access to this software "for free", it is not really free because the school has indeed paid for it and you have paid for the school.
One of excel's biggest competitors is Google Sheets, a completely free version of spreadsheet. All you need is a google account and you have access.
